I think JA was very careful to disquies her characters from thier real life sources, ( if indeed ther were any) so they could not be too readily identified. here I think she made funof the wife,but not the husband.To have coupled them together would have been very obvious and probably quite dangerous, don't you think?

She seems to have deliberately made Mr Elton into altogether a differnt figure of fun.I don't think anyone would describe him as well connected or spendthift ;-)
