Well, the simple white gown was the fashion basic for every season, every year in the early years of the Nineteenth century.
A white gown was the clothing norm for any woman who wanted to look elegant.
Jane herself owned white gowns and fashion plates for day or evening wear 1790-1820 commonly featured stylish white dresses.

Just out of interest, there is a portrait of a lady in a white gown & cap, believed to be Cassandra Austen which was acqured by the Jane Austen Memorial Trust in Chawton.
