There's something else worth noting in this passage..   Written by Arnie Perlstein (11/30/2006 3:18 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I imagine it was..., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

..in the letter about Edward's coach horse acquisition, to wit--I am not the first to note that JA alludes very cleverly to Swift's Gulliver's Travels when she writes "if the judgement of a Yahoo can ever be depended on, I suppose it may be now, for I beleive Mr. Evelyn has all his life thought more of Horses than of anything else." I have not read Gulliver's Travels, but I learned not long ago that the Hounyhymns (I have not checked the spelling!) were horses!

But the best part is that this incident between Edward and Mr. Evelyn must have been in JA's mind when she wrote those memorable scenes in NA about Mr. Thorpe and his boasting about horses. And it fits so well, because if any character in all of JA's novels is just like a Yahoo, it is Mr. Thorpe! ;)
