In letter 22, JA wrote:
I cannot help thinking from your account of Mrs. E.H. that Earle's vanity has tempted him to invent the account of her former way of Life, that his triumph in securing her might be greater;--I dare say she was nothing but an innocent Country Girl in fact.
The first part made me think of a clergyman boasting about having reformed a "bad girl", but the word "secured" made me think of a man persuading a woman to marry him, so now I'm confused. Can anyone tell me which it is?
