The 18h century seems to have had a somewhat cavailer attitude toewards health and safety.

If you look closely at the picture of the Duke of Richmond's fireworks you can see the operators running around the fireworks at quite cose quartres, lighting them...EEEKKKK.

Here is a picture of a display before the night decended and the fireworks were lit, to give you some idea of how it all worked.

The spectators are very close, aren't they?
