"I wore my green shoes last night, & took my white fan with me; I am very glad he never threw it in the river."

I was curious about this line myself. I don't think 'he' refers to George though, as George seems to be where Cassandra is (since he chose the wafer for her last letter).

I was wondering whether in this passage JA might be referring to an episode from a favorite novel? (i.e., with a scene where the heroine carries a white fan and someone throws it in the river) - but I have no idea what novel it would be, if my guess is correct. Perhaps something by Burney...?
