'reserved herself an income'.   Written by Mandy N (11/26/2006 11:10 a.m.)
Are you new?

I was interested to read Jane Austen's comments on Mrs Knight's giving up the Godmersham Estate to Edward as being 'no such prodigious act of Generosity'.

Wouldn't it be customary for a benefactress to reserve herself an income ?

Is Jane seemingly critical of Mrs Knight?
Am I seeing shades of Lady Catherine or Mrs Ferras ?

Any thoughts ? :)
