But they grew in power, and became rulers.

There was a dynasty of these which ruled India for sometime.

There is a picture of a 'mamaluk' soldier from 1810 at Wikepedia, who seems to be wearing such a turban.

I agree with you about the conjecturing on Constance Hill's part :)
