Some thoughts on conceited independence.   Written by Mandy N (9/4/2005 1:31 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, An abominable sort of conceited independence!, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

I'm unsure of the distances between Deane and Steveton, I think at least four or five miles.

Jane's reference to her 'conceited independence' is more likely tongue in cheek as she'd probably walked alone before.
Yet she may've been reminded of footpads.

I don't think etiquette permitted young ladies to walk far alone by themselves in this era.

*Just out of interest, it was illegal to 'asociate' with gypsies. According to 'Jane Austen and Crime'. S. Fullerton it was a hanging offence and many innocent bystanders were 'associated' as being with gypsies.
In Emma, when Harriet was approached by the gypsies, she was probably safer from harm by gypsies than she was from the law.
