...there is a similar thing among people in medical professions, I understand. Not that they don't care, just that when you see something day-to-day you have to make light of it or you will be very depressed...

Women going into childbirth and those around them must have been aware of the terrible risk they faced. I can just imagine wives saying their goodbyes to their husbands before going into labour, just in case!
