Hen Party (Letter 15)   Written by Robbin (9/3/2005 3:17 a.m.)
Are you new?

“My Mother wants to know whether Edward has ever made the Hen House which they planned together”

Hens, pigs, sheep—the Austen’s raise a lot of animals for food and I never knew that ladies did not leave these things to servants but I can not see Mrs. Darcy designing the hen house? There is a lot of talk in Emma about chicken thieves but I do not remember her being involved with the chickens. I don’t think I have heard anything about pets either in the letters? Birds, dogs, cats—were they expensive to maintain?

I wonder if this hen house was to be as elegant as the styes in which Lord Bolton’s pigs reside. I know this has been of some heated debate in barn yards in both the past and present but I have it on good authority that chickens are considered a much nobler creature than pigs but not as noble as horses and no where near the extreme angelic nobleness of dogs but when considered against pigs they do come out ahead and very definitely deserve a prodigiously and vastly more elegant abode.
