|Poor Anna Austen

And now, aged 5, has been sent away from home to stay with her step-grandmother( James' second wife,Mary's mother) at Ibthorpe.
This is a picture of it ,above.( A side note:we are visiting it next year on the ROP trip to England)
Anna appears to have had a difficult relationship with her step mother:
(she) was a clever cheerful hospitable woman, generous where money was concerned thougha careful & excellent mamager .She was also awrm haerted & would take any trouble for her friends.But her manner was abrupt and sharp, & she had a tartness of temper from which even her own childrenoccasionaaly suffered. She did not love her step daughter & she slighted her,she made her of no estimation & the last and least in her father's house .She was very far indeed from being the cruel stepmother of fiction & perhaps in truth of former times ,but certainly it never entered into her imagination that she was to make no difference between her and her own children.
