I do not find it funny at all. Very cruel, even if he was a horrible person in every way. I will chalk it up to being somewhat under strain from the trip, from taking care of her mother's indisposition, from the unpacking and running the household.

But it does remind me that JA was capable of creating Emma's cruelty at the picnic as well as other more lightsome characters.
