The Harwoods   Written by JulieW (9/1/2005 8:50 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Doubtful Reputation, penned by Robbin

Are you new?

The Harwood family were the Austen's neighbours when they ere fisrt married and lived at Deane parsonage. Here is a picture of Deane where they lived.

The Harwoods were the squires of the area: indeed according to Le Fayes Family Record Earl's father was reputed to have been the inspiration for the character of Squire Weston in Tom Jones by Henry Fielding. However as I mentioned in a post below, when the Squire died he had exceeded his income for years unbeknown to his family, and left terrible debts. The family struggled from then on it would appear.

His heir could not afford as a result of the debts, to marry anyone. The poor chap spent the remainder of his life trying to pay off the debts incurred by his father, and keep his widowed mother in comfort. His youngest son Charles seems to have sunk to the level of farmer.Le Faye in the biographical index notes that in latter years he was no longer referred to as "Gentleman" but as yeoman.

Ealre seems to have been the most intersting one:serving as an officer in the Marinesand prior to that he had been a coal merchant(!).However, sadly despite all this I can find no refence as to way this particular girl,Sarah Scott was of "doubtful reputation".

So it is no wonder that the famly still had an interest in the Harwoods.
