Hecht says   Written by JulieW (9/1/2005 6:36 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, What is a customary tip?, penned by Tanya Virginia
Are you new?

that vails were caulated by taking into account the nominal rank of the ervant, the status of the master and the actual service rendered. So you see it is subject ot much interpretation and variation.

In some houses fixed schedules of rates were adopted by the servants and communicated to the guests....

The servants who actually received vails also varied. In some households male servants only received them(!).Some commentators compalined that foreigners would not visit England because they found the situation so outrageous.

So as I said above no wonder JA was seeking advice as to the ammount to pay.Interesting that she didn't ask her sister in law.Perhaps that would have exposed her un-worldliness?
