When I read that, a bell started to go off in my head but I wasn't sure why :) Thanks for clarifying!

I wonder if JA overheard comments about her father reading that book - or other books like it - and used it as part of her satire of gothic novels. You know, she could have been poking fun at people's assumptions on books like that and their influence by having her antagonist in NA read it :)
