Holwell   Written by Jeanne (8/30/2005 10:33 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Black Hole of Calcutta..., penned by Robbin
Are you new?

Actually, Holwell is the name of the man who came back with tales of his own heroic deeds at the Black Hole of Calcutta.

These deeds were later thought to have been made up (I learned this from a Google search). This happened in the 1750's IIRC, so I don't know if his story was discredited by 1796 or not.

I have not a clue as to what Jane meant by this; wish I did! Having only enough income to support one wife makes sense to me, though.

Jeanne
