Yikes, would OUR ladies have gone about with so much, ahem, uncovered? Perhaps they would have worn this as an over-dress, as JA is doing in both Cassandra's portraits. In letter 4 she refers to her new gown as making a superb surplice, which I had thought of as an overshirt (as priests wear today).
