Letters as Gifts   Written by Robbin (8/30/2005 1:08 p.m.)
Are you new?

When Cassandra began giving the letters (Jane wrote to her) away as gifts did she already have an idea that they would actually become priceless artifacts or was the giving of letters and other personal items like JA’s copy of Camilla, already a common practice. I can see how a letter written by JA which includes comments about an individual would be a tremendously personal and heartfelt gift with value even if JA had never become famous. I ask because CEA seemed to be taking care to document their origin which is of course very helpful today or was that too just a common practice—I guess to her it could have just seemed to be the practical thing to do.
