Carolyn, it was published in 1981.You can get it second hand on ABE.com very cheaply.The title is Mrs Hurst Dancing and other scenes from Regency life. by Diana Spurling

As to the umbrellas...I'm as lost as you,Carolyn!

Perhaps it was a windy night and they needed the umberllas to protect their hair? Your guess is as goog as mine ! LOL
