From Letter 5:

we supped there and walked home at night under the shade of two Umbrellas

This made me think of this illustration from Diana Spurling's book of watercolour paintingMrs Hurst Dancing( and mind it is not that Mrs Hurst!).

I wonder why they did not use a carriage? Why the Umbrellas? Was it unexpectedly wet? Puzzling....
