I did not know this... Written by Robbin (8/30/2005 11:44 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, The servant "problem", penned by JulieW

but when you think about it, it makes sense considering a household servant would be essentially taking on extra duties without pay if a tip was not given. I wonder if this would hold true in the homes of the very wealthy—who might provide this personal service as a show of generosity or status.
