The Jane Info pages has some very helpful information regarding "Visits, Traveling, and Carriages." (linked below)

Apparently, costs and propriety led to rather long visits.

This rather puts Col. Brandon's generosity (in assisting Elinor and Marianne's departure from London) in its proper context -- such a kind gentleman indeed!
