In letter 3 JA writes:

"I hope you are all alive after our melancholy parting yesterday, and that you pursued your intended avocation with Success."

Do we know what that "avocation" was or is it clouded in the mists of time (or am I clouded in the mists of work)? It's just bothering me, that it has a meaning I missed.
