Were stockings sized?   Written by Mary Ellen (8/29/2005 1:49 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Silk stockings?, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

I'm almost convinced that a brother, or a close connection might buy clothing items for a woman who had fewer resources, except for the issue of size. Silk is not a very stretchy fabric that can be made to fit anyone. Would Jane have told this fellow that she was a 36W or an 11Z and had him find just the right size and color for her? Or perhaps she would have written a note with the details, which he could just exchange with a shop keeper for a closely wrapped package, without having to actually view the garments in question.
