...according to LeFaye's notes, the Charles referred to in relation to the buying of stockings is Charles Fowle, not Charles Austen, who I gather must have been aboard ship somewhere at the time. Now why on earth would Charles Fowle be buying Jane Austen stockings?! Talk about improper!! If Lady Catherine had heard of it, she would have scolded them all into decorum, I'm sure. ;-)
