|An uninterrupted conversation...

I have this image of Jane starting a letter to Cassandra and keeping it handy, and adding things to it as the days passed, like one long, uninterrupted conversation. I think there was always a letter to her sister on her writing desk.
Reading her letters makes me realize once again how strongly money affected her life. Paper and postage were expensive, (I once read that postage was paid by the recipient, and sending a long letter was the equivalent of a collect call), and breaking a letter into paragraphs would certainly add to the cost.
I think modern editors keep the letters like they were written to avoid changing the meaning and context of the words. I don't know if it's against the GR guidelines to mention this, but I read a very interesting theory about a change in punctuation in a letter regarding Mansfield Park that illustrates this point perfectly.
