this is a good explanation, but I am sure it must not apply to every gap. In this particular case, I am of the opinion that there were comments about TL that Cassandra just did not want people to read.

I've read that Tom's aunt sent him away for fear of an attachment (I don't know if there is proof of this) but the sentence that says he was teased at Ashe makes me think otherwise. If Tom's family laughed about the matter, they probably didn't think it was serious. Also Jane was very fond of Madam Lefroy, and I doubt she would have had very cordial feelings towards her had the lady interfered.
