I'm interested in hearing more about your views on tension between Lady Russell and Anne Elliot. My feelings about Lady Russell are deeply ambivalent and I think differently about her on almost every reread! ;-) We're having a group read of Persuasion a couple of weeks after this one - I hope to talk to you about it more then.

As to Jane being embarrassed about parallels of her life to Persuasion... Persuasion wasn't published until after Jane died, and it was written so late in her life - more than 20 years after these events - that I can't see her dwelling on them, or worrying about them for that length of time.
