Well....   Written by JulieW (8/28/2005 5:03 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, That was James..., penned by Cheryl
Are you new?

After an , ahem, exciting life Henry Austen eventually took Holy Orders, and became the curate of Chawton.

When he was examined by the Bishop of Winchester in 1816 he had studied the New Testament in Greek rather diligently.

Le Faye in her Family Record noted:

that dignitary( the bishop-JW)put his hand on a book which lay near him on the table and whihc happened to be a Greek Testament, and said" as for this book,Mr Austen,i dare say it is some years since either ou or I looked into it"- and Henry who "had been rather proud of being able to get up his knowledge of Greek once more, felt a good deal disappointed at the bishop's conclusion!
