When he was examined by the Bishop of Winchester in 1816 he had studied the New Testament in Greek rather diligently. Le Faye in her Family Record noted: that dignitary( the bishop-JW)put his hand on a book which lay near him on the table and whihc happened to be a Greek Testament,and said" as for this book,Mr Austen,i dare say it is some years since either ou or I looked into it"- and Henry who "had been rather proud of being able to get up his knowledge of Greek once more, felt a good deal disappointed at the bishop's conclusion! p235.
