She uses such a phrase to say the opposite of what she means.

Jane was a master of the throwaway line and I think she's teasing her sister alittle here. ;)

*JA deeply cared for Tom LeFroy and appparently years after her death, Tom Lefroy admitted to his nephew he had loved Jane Austen.

Whether Tom's affection for her was as deep as Jane's was for him maybe a different issue.
