I think hindsight is at work here.
Perhaps they realised their 'role', and tried to reduce the sting of it.

Merely being vexed is not enough, I think. If they wanted, they could have supported Tom. Assuming that he wanted to marry. I think their age was not such a rare one to be married at.

If they were aware that 'Tom paid attentions' to Jane then, the gentlemanly thing would have been to follow it through, but they were in the way.

I speak as a prejudiced and ignorant person, of course ;-)
