|Such a common theme!

I always think of JA as the original social commentator and here is a real life example of a common theme we see in her stories. A concerned relative (parent, aunt/uncle, brother/sister, etc) tries to separate two people who have formed an attachment because the match would not be practical in their eyes.
While reading these first two letters I couldn't help but compare Tom Lefroy and JA's situation to Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax. But where as Tom and Jane never got engaged, Frank and Jane did but had to keep it secret because it was not a prudent match. Also, T & J were open about their attachment while F & J kept theirs a secret. Frank and Tom were around the same age and both would have been too young/immature to properly pursue marriage. The Janes were both penniless so they would not bring much to recommend them to the gentlemen's families. The Frank and Jane scenario almost seems like a "what if" storyline for JA's real life attachment to Tom Lefroy. Although, I may be greatly stretching that and reading way too much into that story :)
Anyway, I can honestly imagine Tom Lefroy's family being angry with him for acting so inappropriately and giving false hopes to a young girl. I can also imagine them refusing to give permission should he asked for her hand.
