...be sympathetic? It sounds as if Cassandra had scolded Jane for her behavior regarding Tom.

"You scold me so much in the nice long letter which I have this moment received from you, that I am almost afraid to tell you how my Irish friend and I behaved."

I suppose Cassandra could have been scolding her about something else, but my impression here is of an elder sister trying to regulate her little sister's behavior. So would Jane have been able to be effusive about Tom or would Cassandra have said "Oh Jane, give it a rest" or the 1796 equivelent. ;-)
