"I write only for Fame...."   Written by JulieW (8/28/2005 3:17 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Pecuniary Emolument, penned by Cathy A
Are you new?

I think she was being deeply ironic.

Well, at the very least, merely ironic..;-)

She had no money of her own,and I think was acutely aware of her financial dependency.

But....

She was also I think very "theatrical".We know she loved the theatre, particularly comedies. Can't you imagine her saying this in a pompous voice: a bit like Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet in P+P2,repeating Darcy's insult;"She is not handsome enough to tempt me.."?

So while it has a grain of ironic truth in it,she is also adopting a consciously comically dramatic tone, which I think she may have adopted when in conversation with Cassandra and other members of her family.
