My Johnson's dictionary of 1821   Written by JulieW (8/28/2005 2:41 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, What did "being particular" mean?, penned by Line
Are you new?

gives this definition of "particular":

individual,singular, odd.

Which doesn't help us much.

I think it maybe a reference to Mr Heathcote and Elizabeth Brigg dancing two sucessive dances, and JA teasing Cassandra with her details about dancing three times in sucession with Tom ,as in a previous missive Cassandra appears to have scolded Ja for such behaviour with Tom at a previous dance.

Just my thoughts....
