...is that while a man's light-coloured coat was hard to keep clean (if that was in fact JA's objection to it), meanwhile, the fashion in upper-class *women's* clothes was also for white and light colours (equally hard to keep clean!). I suppose it was because the fashion for light colours did not extend to men's clothes, so the impracticality of it would have struck her all the more.
Or perhaps, looking at the date, I'm making a mistake and light-coloured clothes for women had not yet become fashionable in 1796?
