About that coat   Written by Golda (8/28/2005 10:28 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, The first letter., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

>I think she is showing a concern for his health by referring to his 'light coat' in her own way.

I do not believe that the term 'light' refers to the weight of the cloth. Instead, JA is referring to the color. JA notes that Tom Lefroy is an admirer of Tom Jones, as in the character/novel, and T.Jones wore a white coat. If you are reading the LeFaye edition of the letters, you can read the details in footnote #13.

Keeping light colored clothing clean was difficult; it was an impractical color for a man's morning coat. Only the very wealthy could be so extravagent.
