I think this first letter is full of a sort of "forced bravado".

I agree she seems to have been very much attatched to Tom Lefroy.As with any first love, you note that she can't help but mention him at every turn. She is arch- referring to him as her "Irish friend",but I think that a sadness does lie behind all this bluster.

And of course at this time,Cassandra is happily engaged to Tom Fowle and is staying at his family's home in Kintbury, near Newbury in Berkshire.*sigh*
