emcompassing cloak with hood ,which originated IIRC in Venice, and were worn both by men nand women at masquerade balls in England throughout the 18th /early 19th century.

Together with a mask they hid the identiy of a person quite well. Which was the point of a masquerade untill the order to un-maks came!

They are shown in Joan Hassels drawing:the two chapss(?) standing immediately behind the bouquest are waering dominoes.
