Oh, I certainly thought JA was mocking those who disobliged their parents simply on "principle," and Laura certainly isn't the only one to do so. But it is always described (by our narrator Laura, whose views on the world are just a bit skewed!) in a positive light, as the only natural and proper thing to do. I was trying for an ironic tone - sorry if that didn't come through.
