L&F & S&S   Written by Robbin (6/19/2006 7:25 a.m.)
Are you new?

In my Mind, every Virtue that could adorn it was centered; it was the Rendez-vous of every good Quality and of every noble sentiment. A sensibility too tremblingly alive to every affliction of my Freinds, my Acquaintance, and particularly to every affliction of my own, was my only fault, if a fault it could be called. (Letter 2nd)

Marianne's abilities were, in many respects, quite equal to Elinor's. She was sensible and clever; but eager in everything; her sorrows, her joys, could have no moderation. She was generous, amiable, interesting: she was everything but prudent. (S&S, Chapter 1)

Laura’s sensibilities reminded me of Marianne Dashwood of S&S—I guess it is kind of obvious as Laura is writing to Marianne. Prepare for some pretty basic comparisons. :D The constant fainting seems modestly echoed by Marianne’s refusal to care for herself and weakening her constitution which leads to her potentially fatal illness--of course neither fainting or not caring for yourself helps matters at all. I think there is a parallel also in how Marianne immediately sees Willoughby as the perfect hero and she goes against decorum in her eagerness to know him, although she does not reward Willoughby with herself during their first interview. LOL

My natural sensibility had already been greatly affected by the sufferings of the unfortunate stranger and no sooner did I first behold him, than I felt that on him the happiness or Misery of my future Life must depend. (Letter 5th)

Marianne herself had seen less of his person than the rest, for the confusion which crimsoned over her face, on his lifting her up, had robbed her of the power of regarding him after their entering the house. But she had seen enough of him to join in all the admiration of the others, and with an energy which always adorned her praise. His person and air were equal to what her fancy had ever drawn for the hero of a favourite story; and in his carrying her into the house with so little previous formality, there was a rapidity of thought which particularly recommended the action to her. Every circumstance belonging to him was interesting. His name was good, his residence was in their favourite village... (Chapter 9)

Philippa earns Laura’s ire for being sensible and reserved as Edward received Marianne’s in S&S:

There was a disagreeable Coldness and Forbidding Reserve in her reception of me which was equally Distressing and Unexpected; none of that interesting Sensibility or amiable Simpathy in her manners and Address to me when we first met, which should have Distinguished our introduction to each other. Her Language was neither warm nor affectionate, her expressions of regard were neither animated nor cordial; her arms were not opened to receive me to her Heart, tho' my own were extended to press her to mine. (Letter 7th)

Elinor looked surprised at his emotion, but trying to laugh off the subject, she said to him, "Do not you know my sister well enough to understand what she means? Do not you know that she calls every one reserved who does not talk as fast, and admire what she admires as rapturously as herself?" (S&S, Chapter 17)

Laura and her friends are very, very, very, very :D self-centered and seeming unaware of the feelings of others just like Marianne in S&S. Laura while so very funny is not as likeable as Marianne because she is so blatantly superior to everyone and she knows it. Marianne Dashwood feels superior to everyone who does not feel like herself also but JA gave her a sister to love and it softens her somehow. Then of course Marianne does learn some lessons and changes by the end of the novel while Laura has not learned from her mistakes as is reflected in her letters which tell of her misfortunes. :D
