Mary Queen of Scots and JA's interest in the Fitzwilliams   Written by Linden (8/25/2004 4:30 p.m.)

One minor mystery of JA's writing was why she took so many names from one family, the Fitzwilliams. As well as giving Fitzwilliam itself (for the Col, and Mr Darcy's Christian name), the stately home of the Fitzwilliams was called Wentworth Woodhouse, and Darcy was a common name in that family.

Why this fascination? The most plausible explanation, IMO, is that one of the founders of the Fitzwilliam rise to fortune was notably kind to Mary Queen of Scots in her imprisonment. See the link below for more details: plenty more on Fitzwilliam family names in the archives at L&T.
