Cindrella and her ugly sisters?   Written by Mandy N (8/25/2004 9:48 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Mary, penned by Carolyn
Are you new?

Reading JA's skit on Mary I (and examining the portraits of
Mary I, Elizabeth compared to Mary Stuart) Mary
is presented by JA like the first sister Jane blames for 'assuming the throne despite the superior pretensions, Merit& Beauty' of her cousin Mary.

Elizabeth is even uglier 'that disgrace to humanity',
and the 'deceitful Betrayer' who suceeds to the throne.

These three women figure largely in JA's History.
The fairytale of Cinderella Mary is surely a tragedy to Jane.
