From what I've read, by modern standards her parents would qualify as at least emotionally abusive. They apparently regarded their three daughters as nothing more than pawns to further the cause of Family. The only really positive thing they did was to ensure that all of them had an excellent education. Jane said something about encountering kindness for the first time when she was sent to live with Katherine Parr (Henry VIII's last wife) for a few years. Then in the end, she was used as a pawn again by people who cared nothing about her personal welfare, and had to pay for it with her life. (The story is that she fainted when she was told that it was her duty to become queen.)
