Why did JA "like" the Duke of Norfolk?   Written by JulieW (8/24/2004 5:01 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Howards, penned by Deborah d'Bajor
Are you new?

There may be an answer in a vogue for sentimental historical novels.

One of these The Recess published in 1765 and written by a Mrs Lee was, to quote Brain Southam in Jane Austen's Literary Manuscripts, a part of a:

considerable branch of historical fiction devoted to embroidery upon the life of MAry Stuart.A notable and absurd fantasy of this kind was The Recess by Mss Lee , in which the friendship between Mary and Norfolk is represented as a romantic liason, a fancy echoed in Jane Austen's account.

So therfore, to JA , any romantic friend of MAry Queen of Scots, ahd to be her friend ;-)
