Mary and Phillip were first cousins once removed - his father Carlos V - Holy Roman Emperor (Carlos I of Spain) was first cousin to Mary and they were betrothed at one time!!! Phillip was his son.

Of course the fact that Catherine of Aragon was the Aunt to Carols made things a little difficult when Henry was after his divorce - and Rome had just been sacked by the Imperial troops...
