Two comments on history and a tragedy play.   Written by Mandy N (8/22/2004 12:46 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Not worth reading?, penned by LaurieC

I think JA was being flippant with that remark!

1.She enjoyed turning serious plays into comedies. I think that's what she's doing with her History of England. Turning a subject that's treated so seriously into something amusing and readable for her family.

2. 'Jane Shore, who has had a play written about her, but it is a tragedy and therefore not worth reading';

JA wanted to see the great Regency tragedienne Mrs Siddons perform on stage.
Interestingly, one of Mrs Siddons great roles was as Jane Shore, and people swooned in the audience! I guess it's the same play Austen refers to.

For myself, I feel sure JA would've read this play if there was an available copy.
