It was in this reign that Joan of Arc lived   Written by Carolyn (8/21/2004 12:02 p.m.)
Are you new?

"& made such a row among the English. They should not have burnt her--but they did."

Joan of Arc went on trial for heresy and was condemed for it. The trial was a bit of a mockery as English government documents record in great detail the payments made to cover the costs of obtaining Joan and rewarding the various judges and assessors who took part in her trial. (the financial records are available on-line as well as trial transcripts if you are interested)

Some of these men later admitted that the English conducted the proceedings for the purposes of revenge rather than out of any genuine belief that she was a heretic.

She was tried a second time posthumously and was aquitted of the charges (though by that time England no longer had any claim to the French lands Joan was fighting for and, imho, it is much easier to aquit a dead woman than an alive one)

I have linked to a site with nice summary of her life & times.

Joan is woman #3 to match the 3 monarchs we have so far.
