I thought it might have something to do with Pommes Frites, which was my first suspicion (or I may have just been hungry).

I get the Pythonesque image of the king (with crown & all) looking forlornly out the window of his prison whilst eating fries (with ketchup) every time I type or read Pomfret.

(and potatoes wouldn't make there way to England for another hundred+ years)
